The Maji Safi Group

Bruce Maj Pelz

Today we are speaking with Bruce Maj Pelz, cofounder of the Maji Safi group.  The Maji Safi group works with the people of Tanzania to educate impoverished and vulnerable populations about how to prevent disease and improve their health. The Maji Safi group focuses on the gap between treatment and actual prevention.  They work in the communities, for the communities.

In this podcast, Bruce explains why there is a critical need for education surrounding health and hygiene.  Only one in three people in their sector have access to a toilet and access to clean drinking water.  Another subject that the Maji Safi group educates is menstrual hygiene management.  Menstrual hygiene is a massive barrier to girls completing their education and the Maji Safi group would like to change that.

Maji Safi means clean water in Swahili.  This is what this organization is all about.  Education isn’t always as flashy as building a new well or a water pump- but education will last for generations. Maji Sofi has done an excellent job working with what they have and teaching the people how to better care for themselves.  They not only educate inside of the schools, but they educate the adults in the villages as well.
